Essential gear

Your gear checklist for a snowmobile adventure

Get set up for blast in the backcountry

A successful backcountry snowmobiling trip is about more than just a powerful sled and deep powder. It’s about being prepared for anything the mountains throw at you. Having the right gear not only keeps you safe and comfortable but also allows you to focus on the thrill of the ride. Packing properly ensures you can handle long days in variable conditions and relax fully once you’re back at the lodge.

At Carl Kuster Mountain Park, we’ve seen it all. We know what works, what doesn’t, and what you’ll wish you had packed. This essential gear checklist is built from years of experience in the British Columbia backcountry to help you prepare for your next great adventure.

The Foundation: Proper Riding Apparel

Staying warm and dry is the single most important factor for a good day on the snow. The key is layering. This system allows you to adapt to changing temperatures and activity levels, whether you’re charging up a hill or stopping for a break.

The Layering System

  • Base Layer: This is your next-to-skin layer. Its job is to wick moisture away from your body to keep you dry. Look for materials like merino wool or synthetic fabrics. Avoid cotton at all costs, as it holds moisture and will make you cold.
  • Mid-Layer: This is your insulating layer. Its purpose is to trap body heat. Fleece or a lightweight down jacket are excellent choices. You can add or remove this layer throughout the day to regulate your temperature.
  • Outer Layer (Shell): Your final layer is your protection against the elements. A high-quality, waterproof, and windproof jacket and pants (or a one-piece suit) are crucial. This shell keeps the snow and wind out while allowing the moisture wicked by your base layer to escape.

Essential Accessories

  • Goggles: High-quality goggles are non-negotiable for visibility and eye protection. We strongly recommend bringing a spare pair or at least a spare lens for different light conditions. At CKMP our guides use the TEMPEST heated goggle or the Skidoo Edge goggle. Both available at the CKMP shop.

  • Gloves: Your hands do a lot of work. Your gloves should be waterproof and need to be warm but thin enough for feel and dexterity. It’s wise to always have 2 sets of gloves. The CKMP guides use the Skidoo Aspect glove long and short version. They have the perfect amount of warmth with the perfect amount of dexterity. Available in the CKMP store.

  • Balaclava or Neck Warmer: This protects your face and neck from windburn and frostbite. A thin balaclava fits comfortably under your helmet. Available in the CKMP store.
  • Kneepad/Shin Guard: A simple kneepad and shin guard are a total game changer. Saving your shins from a running board hit or your knees from hitting the panels is key. At CKMP store we have the Thor knee/shin pads available.
  • Socks: Just like your base layer, moisture-wicking wool or synthetic socks are essential. Pack extra pairs.

Don’t want to buy an entire new outfit? CKMP Rental Gear: To make your trip easier, we offer rental packages that include high-quality outer-layer bib pants, boots, and a helmet. You just need to bring your personal items like goggles and gloves and under-layers.

Items You’ll Be Glad You Packed

These small items are often overlooked but can make a huge difference in your comfort and safety.

  • Sunscreen and Lip Balm: The sun’s reflection off the snow is incredibly intense especially in late March early April.
  • Sunglasses: Perfect for when you take your helmet off during breaks or for relaxing back at the lodge.

Prepare for Lodge Life

Your adventure doesn’t end when the sleds are parked. Being comfortable back at the lodge is part of the experience. After a huge day of riding, you’ll want to relax and recharge.

  • Bathing Suit: Our hot tub and sauna are perfect places to soothe tired muscles and relive the day’s highlights with your group. Don’t miss out!
  • Comfortable Lodge Wear: Pack slippers or comfortable indoor shoes, sweatpants, and a hoodie. Changing into cozy clothes is one of the best feelings after a day in riding gear.
  • Personal Items: Don’t forget your toiletries and any personal medications you might need.

Proper preparation is the first step toward an incredible backcountry snowmobiling adventure. By packing smart, you set yourself up for a safe, comfortable, and truly unforgettable experience in the mountains.
